Gallaudet strikes out against Washington College

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Gallaudet University baseball team lost to Washington (Md.) College, 9-4, here Saturday on the road at Athey Park.

Gallaudet (5-12), led by senior starting pitcher Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.), contained Washington College (9-10) for the first four innings as the Bison jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

However, the Shoremen surged back in the fifth and sixth innings as they combined for seven runs while they retired the Bison in order. Shoremen outfielder Charlie Meder smacked a grand slam to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning for the host.

GU cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the seventh when junior outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) singled to plate Phillips. Junior first basemen Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) singled to load the bases for sophomore shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.). Upton reached base on a throwing error by the shortstop as freshman Connor Rosko (Austin, Texas) raced home from third base.

Washington College responded again in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off the Bison relievers to extend its lead to 9-4.

The Bison struggled to get in a rhythm as Shoremen pitchers Billy Griffin (3-1) and Logan Dubbe combined for 17 strikeouts and only one walk.

Phillips (2-3) went six innings where he allowed seven earned runs on six hits, walked six and struck out two.
