GU drops NEAC opener to Penn St.-Berks

READING, Pa. – Gallaudet University its North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) portion of the baseball schedule with two losses here Saturday in a doubleheader against Penn St.-Berks, losing the first game 15-0 and the second game 3-0.

Game 1: Penn St.-Berks 15, Gallaudet 0
Gallaudet (5-20, 0-2 NEAC) surrendered a run to Penn St.-Berks (11-5, 2-0 NEAC) in the opening inning but held them in check until the fourth inning when the gates blew open as the Nittany Lions scored eight runs as Gallaudet committed two errors. Penn St.-Berks followed up with four more in the fifth inning and added two more in the seventh inning to cap its 15-run attack.

Nittany Lions sophomore starting pitcher Sean Pavlik (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season as he handcuffed the Bison batters through eight innings, striking out 11 batters while surrendering just three hits. Gallaudet's Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) took the loss as he pitched five innings and surrendered 12 hits, 13 runs (three earned), walking six batters and striking out five. Senior Brad Stockdill (New Castle, Pa.) pitched the last three innings in relief.

Penn St.-Berks sophomore Pearce Harhigh had a game-high four hits, driving in two runs and scoring twice and freshman Toby Welk added two hits and drove in three runs.

Game 2: Penn St.-Berks 3, Gallaudet 0
Gallaudet gave up two runs to the Nittany Lions in the opening inning and one more in the third inning, but junior starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) kept the Bison in the game until the very end. Gallaudet's bats could not give Evans any run support as they were handcuffed by Nittany Lions junior starting pitcher Zach Reis (1-2) who pitched a complete game shutout, surrendering seven hits and a walk while striking out three batters. 

Junior third baseman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) was the lone Bison with a multi-hit game. Penn St.-Berks senior Nick Zipay had two hits and scored twice as senior Tom Grablewski drove in two runs. 

BISON TRACKS

  • Junior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) and Stockdill were the only Bison with hits in both games
  • Stockdill had the lone extra base hit today with a triple in the first game

UP NEXT
Gallaudet remains on the road as it will next travel to Virginia to play nationally-ranked Shenandoah University in a non-conference nine-inning game tomorrow (Sunday, April 3) at 1 p.m. The No. 9 Hornets are currently 18-6 on the season.
