GU edged in pitchers' duel with Southern Vermont, 1-0

Box Score

WASHINGTON - It was quite the pitchers' duel between Gallaudet University's Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) and Southern Vermont College's Dylan Angelo here Sunday afternoon at Hoy Field. In the end, the visiting Mountaineers (3-3) manufactured a run in the eighth inning and held on to win 1-0.

Angelo (2-1) pitched his second complete-game shutout this season as he only allowed three hits to the Bison (3-9). The junior right-hander walked three batters and threw 113 pitches in the nine-inning non-conference game.

Phillips (0-3) had his best outing this season as he went eight strong innings where he allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out six on 104 pitches. Senior Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) came in to relieve Phillips in the ninth and threw a scoreless frame on just nine pitches.

With one out in the top of the eighth inning, RJ Pingitore (2-for-3) walked and promptly stole second base and advanced to third on a balk by Phillips. Two batters later, Anthony Mercuri singled to left field to plate Pingitore. Phillips got out of the jam when John Arancio lined into a double play.

Freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) singled to left field to lead-off the bottom of the ninth inning. Junior Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) tried to sacrifice Upton over to second but the bunt went right to Angelo, who quickly tossed the ball to second base to begin the double play. Freshman Gilwon Seo (Chungju, South Korea) grounded out to end the game.

Gallaudet got out of a big jam in the seventh inning when the Mountaineers led things off with a double and single and placed runners on second and third base after a sacrifice bunt with one out. Phillips then struck out Luigi Magliocca and Zack Stacey grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.

The Bison collected their first hit with an infield single to the left-side of the infield in the fifth inning. GU left two runners on base that frame as another batter walked earlier.

GU had a chance to score a run a in the first inning after senior outfielder Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) walked, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and moved up to third base after a ground-out. Crawford followed with a walk and stole second base before Seo struck out swinging with runners on second and third base.
