Late-inning comeback spurs Gallaudet to split against Summit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning, in the second game, to complete an 11-8 comeback over Summit University here Saturday at a cold Hoy Field. The late-inning rally helped Gallaudet (3-8) split a non-conference doubleheader against the Defenders (1-3), who won the first game 6-2.

Game 1: Summit 6, Gallaudet 2
Summit raced out to an early 2-0 lead before Gallaudet answered in the bottom of the second inning with a run of its own when sophomore catcher Jake Grindstaff (New Market, Md.) singled to right field, bringing home freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.). The Bison added another run in the sixth inning when junior Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) tripled and scored two batters later on a groundout.

Summit would proceed to score two more runs in the third and fourth innings off senior starting pitcher Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio), who surrendered five hits and six runs in 3.2 innings before being relieved by senior Albert Blake (New Derby, Conn.). Junior Ken Genztke (Scottsville, N.Y.) pitched the final inning.

Despite collecting five hits, four walks and reaching base on three Defenders errors, Gallaudet's bats struggled to put together significant rallies, stranding nine baserunners.

Game 2: Gallaudet 11, Summit 8
Both teams didn't score until the third inning when Summit put up five runs to stake a lead that would be short-lived as Gallaudet answered back with five of their own in the bottom half. In the fourth inning, senior Brad Stockdill (New Castle, Pa.) hit a double to left field to plate freshman Gilwon Seo (Chungju, South Korea).

The Defenders finally chased sophomore Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) in the sixth inning by scoring three runs before Blake came in on relief. Blake (1-0) was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.

The sixth inning rally started with a walk by sophomore Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas). Hayes and senior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) hit back-to-back singles, scoring Gumm. Upton slugged a double, scoring both Hayes and Magsig to give Gallaudet the lead for good. The Bison would tack on two more runs before the inning was over.

Upton spearheaded the Gallaudet offense by going 3-for-4, driving in three runs and scored twice. Hayes, Magsig, Gumm and Seo all scored twice and Hayes added two hits.
