Five-run sixth not enough for Gallaudet against Rivier at Regency Furniture Stadium

Box Score

WALDORF, Md. - A late-inning rally by the Gallaudet University baseball team wasn't enough here Friday night against Rivier University as the Bison lost 10-7 at Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

Gallaudet (4-17) mounted a strong comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bison scored five times off Rivier starting pitcher Edward Soucie (2-2) to cut the Raiders lead to one, 8-7.

Rivier (4-11) added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning off Bison reliever Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) to gain some breathing room in the neutral non-conference night game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gallaudet sophomore Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.), who had earlier singled and advanced to third base, scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) for the inning's second out. Junior Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) doubled to left field and freshman Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) singled home Phillips. Junior Kenneth Gentzke III (Scottsville, N.Y.) beat out an infield hit to shortstop to place runners on first and second base. They both advanced on a passed ball before scoring on the next play. Sophomore Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) had an infield single but a throwing error allowed the runners to score and Gumm ended up on third base. Two batters later, freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) singled home Gumm before senior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) flied out to end the five-run sixth inning.

Gallaudet starting pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) took the loss as he allowed seven runs (two earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out five.

Soucie pitched 5.2 innings where he allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, two walks and struck out two. Spencer Aguiar earned his second save of the season as he pitched over three innings to end the game.

Rivier scored a run in the top of the first inning, three runs in the third, four runs in the top of the sixth and two in the eighth. Gallaudet plated two runs in the third and the five-run sixth.
