GU rally comes up short in loss to Colby-Sawyer

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Gallaudet University sophomore outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) singled home two runs in the top of the ninth inning here Wednesday in hopes of sparking a late-inning rally against Colby-Sawyer College at Chain of Lakes Field #3. The Bison offense stalled as GU came up short, 11-6, during the RussMatt Baseball Invitational.

Gallaudet (4-14) got its offense going early with a run in the top of the first inning when Gumm singled to lead-off the game. After advancing to second, Gumm scored on a RBI single by junior first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.). The lead dissipated when Gallaudet committed three errors in the bottom of the second inning, allowing Colby-Sawyer (4-2) to score four runs. The Chargers added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, a run in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth before a three-spot in the sixth to conclude their 11-run attack.

Senior Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) added a RBI single and junior Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to bring home two runs. Magsig hit another RBI single in the sixth inning before the short-lived ninth-inning rally. Freshman Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) took his first loss of the season, starting the first three innings as he allowed six runs (four earned) and struck out two batters. Junior Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) came in for three innings of relief work where he allowed five more runs (four earned) before senior Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) closed out the last two innings.

Chargers senior starting pitcher Mike Bowse pitched seven innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs, striking out two batters while earning his first win of the season. Senior Mike Peters and freshman John White pitched one inning apiece to close things out.
