Bison swept by Muhlenberg College on Sunday afternoon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University dropped a baseball doubleheader here Sunday to Muhlenberg College before a nice crowd at Hoy Field on an unseasonable warm day. The visiting Mules (4-0) won 8-2 and 9-3 in the seven-inning games over the Bison (2-5).

Game 1: Muhlenberg 8, Gallaudet 2
The Bison couldn't get a hit against Muhlenberg starting pitcher Sam Kasten until the sixth inning when senior outfielder Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) reached base on an infield single to the shortstop. Magsig then stole second base before scoring on a RBI-single by freshman third baseman Ryan Gilbert (Mount Dora, Fla.) to put the Bison on the scoreboard. GU would push across another run in the seventh inning when junior second baseman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) doubled to right field. After advancing to third, he scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Gilwon Seo (Chungju, South Korea).

Junior starting pitcher Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.) took the loss as he pitched 5.2 innings where he allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, walked two and five strikeouts. Muhlenberg led 2-0 after two innings and added another run in the fourth before chasing Phillips in the two-run sixth. Senior Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief duty.

Game 2: Muhlenberg 9, Gallaudet 3
In the second game after the Mules scored a run in the first inning, the Bison immediately responded back in their half of the inning. Lead-off batter Magsig reached first on an error and after stealing second, freshman shortstop Cameron Upton (Vicksburg, Miss.) advanced him to third on a single. Junior Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) drove him home with a sac fly.

Muhlenberg's bats kept going as it scored eight more runs in the next four innings off starting pitcher Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio). Blake and Upton would combine for the final 2.1 innings in relief. GU was able to push two runs across in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
