Bison shake off slow start en route to 10th NEAC win of season

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team won, 59-40, at home on Saturday afternoon against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent Wilson College before 260 at the Field House. GU participated in the annual Women's Basketball Coaches Association "Play 4Kay" pink day initiative to raise awareness for breast cancer as the Bison and fans were decked out in pink.

Gallaudet (11-10, 10-6 NEAC) took the lead in the first quarter but didn't get off easy in the physical South Division game.

GU took advantage of its strong post players in sophomore forward Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) and senior forward Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.), who grabbed 13 and 12 rebounds, respectively, as the Bison brought down 65 rebounds. Along with rebounds, the Bison outscored the Phoenix (2-18, 0-17 NEAC) by 18 points in the paint (32-14) and scored 24 second-chance points.

The Bison offense was led by sophomore Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Kori Koss (Green Bay, Wis.) added to the team totals with 12 points, a career-high nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block.

The game took a slow start with 18 turnovers and 30 missed shots in the first quarter, as the Phoenix made only one field goal. GU led 26-15 at the half.

Wilson was led by freshmen Lindsey Purvis and Jordyn Day, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bison remain at home and will host Bryn Athyn College (13-9, 11-6 NEAC), who is in second-place of the NEAC South Division standings ahead of GU, on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m.
