Baseball rally falls short against Washington College

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Gallaudet University baseball team lost, 6-4, on the road Monday to Washington College at Athey Baseball Park on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Gallaudet (3-16) cut into Washington's lead late in the game but couldn't knot the score as the Bison left the bases loaded in the seventh and had runners at the corners in the eighth. The Bison left 12 runners on base in the game, seven total in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. GU had at least one runner left on base in seven of the nine innings.

The Bison cut the Shoremen (14-5) lead in half with two runs in the sixth when junior Brad Stockdill (New Castle, Pa.) singled through the left side of the infield to score senior Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio). Senior Tom Pangia (Hammonton, N.J.) picked up a RBI with a ground out, two batters later, as sophomore Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) came home.

Gallaudet loaded the bases in the eighth when Stockdill got hit by the pitch to score sophomore Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) to cut the margin to two, 6-4. Junior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) struck out swinging to end the Bison rally.

Freshman pitcher Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) took the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out four in five innings. Coleman pitched three scoreless innings where he allowed one hit and struck out four.

Sam McGovern (2-1) earned the victory as he allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out seven in six innings. Joe DiPaola picked up the save as he came on in the seventh. Center fielder Logan Dubbe blasted a grand slam in the five-run third inning.

The Bison jump back into conference play this weekend as they host two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foes. Gallaudet will start things off with two games against SUNY Poly on Saturday at noon.
