WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team lost, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon against crosstown rival Catholic University of America at Hoy Field in a nine-inning non-conference game.

The Cardinals (16-9-1) scored three runs in the third inning and added an insurance run in the eighth. Gallaudet (5-19) cut the Catholic lead to one, 3-2, in the bottom of the fifth but couldn't tie the game as the Bison stranded runners on second and third base. GU left two runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, eight total in the game.

Freshman Dylan Hayes (Endicott, N.Y.) delivered for the Bison in the fifth with a two-run double that fell into right field as senior Tom Pangia (Hammonton, N.Y.) and sophomore Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) raced home. Hayes went 2-for-4 at the plate as GU tallied nine hits.

Bison starting pitcher Albert Blake (Derby, Conn.) suffered the loss as he allowed three runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Catholic had nine singles in the win and was led by Stefan Poggioli, who scored twice and drove in two runs.

Gallaudet was slated to host No. 8 Shenandoah University but that game got canceled due to a conference conflict for the Hornets, thus the Bison and the Cardinals played a game today. This is the second time this season these two teams have met as Catholic won the first meeting 12-1 on March 25.

Gallaudet jumps back into conference play this weekend with four North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games on the road. The Bison (3-3 NEAC) will face Penn College (7-12, 1-3 NEAC) on Saturday at noon for two games before heading to Keuka College (5-16, 1-3 NEAC) for a doubleheader on Sunday.
