Bison come up short against national power Rowan

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The last two seasons the Gallaudet University baseball team had pulled off thrilling victories against nationally ranked Rowan University during Spring Break in Florida. The Bison were unable to make it three straight on Wednesday as they lost 13-1 to the Profs at Lake Myrtle Park as part of the RussMatt Invitational.

Rowan (5-4), who was ranked last week but unranked this week, scored at least one run in the first seven innings. The Profs led 8-0 after six innings when Gallaudet (0-9) got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning.

Freshman Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded before he reached on a fielder's choice as sophomore Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) ran home. Gallaudet's two-out rally ended as Gumm got picked off first base.

The Profs put the game away with five runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Rowan starting pitcher Richie Suarez threw eight innings as he allowed four hits, one unearned run and struck out eight Bison.

Junior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) started the game on the mound and allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits, three walks and one strikeout. Junior Brad Stockdill (New Castle, Pa.) relieved Coleman in the sixth inning and finished the game as he surrendered six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks. Strong led the team with two hits.

The Bison defeated No. 10 Rowan last season, 2-0, and in 2013 they won 11-10 in 11 innings against No. 23 Rowan.

GU will conclude its Spring Break trip tomorrow (Thursday, March 19) against Sewanee in Lakeland, Fla., at Southeastern University in Broer Stadium at noon.
