Bison drop five-set match to Wells, bounce back with win over Cazenovia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AURORA, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team split its two North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) games here Saturday as they concluded the NEAC Crossover Weekend hosted by Wells College.

Gallaudet (11-5, 5-1 NEAC) went the distance with the host Express but lost in five sets; 14-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 13-15. Wells (10-7, 6-0 NEAC) defeated Gallaudet, the five-time NEAC champions, for the first time in four tries and is one of two teams still perfect in conference play. The Express won every odd set and was pushed to the brink in the fifth and final set against the Bison. GU held an edge in kills (52-45) and service aces (10-5) but it was the 13 service errors and 19 attack errors that proved costly for the buff and blue.

Sophomore Darriyan Thomas (Vallejo, Calif.) led both teams with 13 kills as well as 13 digs to record the double-double. Freshman Raelyn Fuechtmann (South St. Paul, Minn.) led the Bison with 15 digs, and senior TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.) had all but three assists in the game as she passed out 48 and added 11 digs and one service ace. Wells was led by Olyvia Brazier's 10 kills, nine digs, three service aces and two blocks.

GU came back with a vengeance and won in straight sets over Cazenovia College, 25-17, 25-20, 25-15. The Bison outplayed the Wildcats (4-10, 0-5 NEAC) in nearly every aspect of the match; kills (44-25), attack attempts (89-63), service aces (9-6), and digs (25-18). Once again, Thomas ruled the net with 14 kills and two service aces. Hoglind passed out 38 assists in the win.

In the two matches, senior Molly Perkins (Apple Valley, Minn.) recorded 18 kills while senior Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) added 17 kills, eight digs and three service aces. Fuechtmann led the team with 20 digs.
