Total team effort leads GU to 24-point win over SUNY Cobleskill

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's basketball team defeated North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opponent SUNY Cobleskill, 58-34, Saturday afternoon in the Field House.

Gallaudet (5-6, 4-3 NEAC) dominated the court during the first half of the game as the defense caused 16 turnovers against the Fighting Tigers (1-8, 0-4 NEAC) and turned that into 18 points. The Bison offense outplayed the Fighting Tigers, shooting at 44.8 percent from the field (13 of 29), as well as 66.7 percent from the three-point range and from the free throw line. The first half ended on a last-second jump shot from junior Danielle Morris (St. Louis, Mich.) to give the Bison a 13-point lead, 32-19.

The Bison continued to run past the Fighting Tigers in the second half as GU took a 29-point lead with 7:35 left in the game. Gallaudet received a total team effort as the Bison had balanced scoring and every player contributed on defense. The Bison bench scored 27 of the team's 58 points while all 50 rebounds were split between 10 players. Gallaudet played 13 players, who were in uniform, during the game as everyone logged at least five minutes or more and 11 players scored at least one point.

The Bison were led by junior guard Zamica Gage's (Washington, D.C.) 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists performance. Senior forward Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) added eight rebounds and two points. Junior Danielle Warren (San Jose, Calif.) and senior Alexa Justus (Forks, Wash.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively, Justus also matched fellow senior Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) with six rebounds each. Ciccarelli had four assists and four steals as well. Freshman guard Sabina Shysh (Tucson, Ariz.) added seven points, five rebounds, three steals and made a block.

Cobleskill was led by Shelby Preston's 12 points, nine rebounds and one steal in 27 minutes of play.

The Bison will return to the Field House tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 18) to face SUNY Polytechnic Institute (6-5, 4-0 NEAC) in another conference game at 1 p.m.
