WASHINGTON – The College Sports
Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its 2014
Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Teams and Gallaudet
University senior women's swimmer Katie Giles
(Gaithersburg, Md.) was named to the District 2 first team for
Division III. Giles will now be added to the national ballot for
the chance to earn Academic All-America honors, which will be
announced on Tuesday, June 3. This is Giles' first Academic
All-District first team honor.
Giles is a three-sport student-athlete at Gallaudet as she
lettered in women's soccer, women's swimming and women's track and
field this past school year. The social work major with a
criminology minor has a 3.98 cumulative grade point average. Giles

and was recently inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma honor society
for student-athletes. She earned North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC) Scholar-Athlete honors last year. In the pool, she was a
three-time All-NEAC first team honoree as she was a member of three
first-place relay teams (200-yard freestyle, 200 medley, 400
medley) at the 2014 conference championships. Giles helped the
Bison secure a podium finish as GU finished third overall at the
NEAC championships.
The at-large category features student-athletes from 25
different NCAA sports including; women's bowling,
women's crew, men's and women's fencing,
women's field hockey, men's and women's golf,
men's and women's gymnastics, men's and

he was named to the District 2 second team.
Gallaudet has earned five Academic All-America selections in
program history since the inception of the awards in 1952.
Adham Talaat was selected to the football
first and second team in 2013 and 2012, respectively, and
Ann Whited was selected to the women's
volleyball third team in 2012. Wayne
Langbein was named to the men's second team for track
and field in 1993 and Brian Bippus was
selected to the men's basketball second team in 1991.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, a
student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain
a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have
reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her
current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information
director. District 2 is comprised of Connecticut, Washington, D.C.,
Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West
Virginia.
CoSIDA began this program in the 1950's, and since then, has
honored thousands of deserving student-athletes from numerous
sports and across all divisions with these elite Capital One
Academic All-America scholar-athlete honors. Currently, CoSIDA
honors Academic All-America teams in 12 sports.
The Academic All-District teams include the student-athletes
listed per sport and are divided into eight geographic districts
across the United States and Canada. This is the third year of the
expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from
recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College
Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of
scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division
I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the
College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year
schools.
The Capital One Division II and III Academic All-America program
is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III
national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the
awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 DII and DIII Academic
All-America teams program.
