Smith tosses a complete game, hits grand slam as Bison defeat Washington College

Box Score

WASHINGTON - Senior Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) threw a complete game on a dreary and wet Monday afternoon as Gallaudet University defeated Washington College, 8-4, in a non-conference game at Hoy Field.

Smith (3-1) faced 38 batters and tossed 105 pitches as he allowed four runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out four. Smith helped his own cause in the bottom of the fourth inning when he jacked a grand slam over the left field fence to give GU (24-13) a 4-2 lead over the Shoremen (16-20).

Washington's Michael Acampora (3-for-4) tied the game up in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run to left field.

The Bison regained the lead in the bottom half of the eighth when senior outfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) lifted a fly ball to right field to plate freshman Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.). Freshman first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) followed with a double to left field to plate senior JJ Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Bissell. Strong then scored when junior Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) singled up the middle but a throwing error by Washington shortstop Nick Marinelli allowed the eighth Bison run to score and Bensman to advance to second base.

Smith (3-for-3, two runs, four RBI), Strong (2-for-5, two RBI), Bensman (2-for-3) and senior Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) are had two or more hits to lead the Bison offense.

Washington relief pitcher Sam McGovern (2-4) took the loss as he allowed the four runs in the eighth. Shoremen starter Michael Long lasted five innings where he surrendered four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out two.

Gallaudet will rest up for the final weekend of the regular season as the Bison host Penn St.-Abington in a crucial three-game North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) series. The teams will play two games on Saturday, May 3, and one game on Sunday, May 4.
