Holsworth tosses one-hitter as Gallaudet shuts out Cazenovia in NEAC doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON – Junior starting pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) was two outs from a no-hitter in Gallaudet's first game of two against Cazenovia College on a sunny Monday afternoon at Hoy Field but the visiting Wildcats ended the bid with a bloop single to left field. Holsworth (5-1) retired the next two batters as he recorded the one-hit shutout, 3-0, where he faced 25 batters, walked three, struck out six and threw 84 pitches.

The Bison swept the doubleheader with a 9-0 win in the second game to take the three-game North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) series against Cazenovia (2-10, 0-3 NEAC).

Holsworth struck out the first batter in the top of the seventh before Dan Hodne stepped to the plate. Holsworth fell behind, 3-1, on the batter before the left-handed batter blooped an opposite field hit to shallow left field. Holsworth ended the game with a pop up to shortstop and a ground out to second base.

Gallaudet (15-7, 3-0 NEAC) was led offensively by senior second baseman JJ Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and run scored. Senior third baseman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) had two hits, including a triple, and scored one of GU's three runs. Freshman shortstop Blake Phillips (Dalton, Ga.), senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) and junior Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) had RBI singles in the win.

In the second game, senior Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) pitched a strong game as posted six scoreless innings as he allowed three hits, two walks and struck out five en route to his second win of the season. Junior Ben Coleman (St. Paris, Ohio) finished out the game with a scoreless seventh inning where he only needed 15 pitches to conclude the day.

GU received a complete team effort as all nine batters had at least one hit. Klein led the way again with a 2-for-4 performance as he scored three runs, doubled and had a RBI single in the fourth inning. Hicks had a bases clearing triple in the fourth as he drove in three runs, scored once and walked twice. Guinn knocked in two runs in the nine-run victory as he doubled home a run in the six-run fourth inning. Senior centerfielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) reached home twice for the Bison and had a RBI single in the fifth.

The Bison will continue their NEAC play tomorrow (Tuesday, April 1) as they welcome Catholic University of America to Hoy Field for a tough in-region game set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
