Gallaudet bats heat up on frigid day against St. Mary's

Box Score

WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University baseball team won in convincing fashion on a frigid, windy Wednesday afternoon with a 11-4 victory over St. Mary's (Md.) College at Hoy Field.

Despite the cold weather, Gallaudet (12-7) got off to a hot start jumping out in front early. In the first three innings, the Bison scored six runs while holding the Seahawks (12-13) scoreless. Starting freshman pitcher Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.) allowed only two hits against 20 batters faced, walking two and struck out one in six scoreless innings pitched.

On offense, the Bison received contributions from numerous players as eight different players collected at least one hit as the team tallied 16 hits in the win. In five plate appearances, senior outfielder Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) had three hits, one RBI and scored three runs. Senior second baseman JJ Klein (Cincinnati, Ohio) had two doubles, three RBI and scored three runs. Senior outfielder William Bissell  (Brewer, Maine) also knocked in three RBI off of three hits, one of which was a triple. Senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) and sophomore infielder Chase Magsig (Hudsonville, Mich.) and junior second baseman Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) racked up two hits on the day. Freshman first baseman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman designated hitter Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) had a hit and run scored each.

The Bison bullpen of senior Tyler Crace (Westfield, Ind.) and freshman Matt Taylor (Auburn, Kan.) allowed two runs each in the last three innings.

For St. Mary's, shortstop Luke Green led the team with two runs, while second baseman Zach Rowe piled up two RBI for the Seahawks. A.J. Norby (0-3) took the loss as he allowed seven runs (two earned) on 10 hits, four walks and struck out two.

The Bison will be at home on Saturday, March 29, as they kick-off North Eastern Atlantic Conference (NEAC) play when they host Cazenovia College for a doubleheader set to begin at noon.
