O'Donnell hurls complete game in historic win over McDaniel

Box Score

WASHINGTON – Sophomore pitcher Danny O'Donnell (Olney, Md.) pitched a complete game to lead Gallaudet University to a 5-2 victory over McDaniel College on a frigid Thursday afternoon at Hoy Field. O'Donnell (1-1) threw 104 pitches in the nine-inning baseball game as he faced 37 batters, struck out three, allowed six hits and two unearned runs in the ninth.

The win is the first by a Bison baseball team against McDaniel (formerly known as Western Maryland College) since 1908. The Green Terror (1-2) entered today's game 3-0 against the Bison since 1992. The two teams have met three times in the past four seasons. GU defeated Western Maryland College, 10-7, in 1908 and held a 5-2 series lead over them from 1897-1908.

Gallaudet (2-3) broke open a close game in the bottom of the seventh inning as two McDaniel errors helped three runs score. Senior catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) hit a triple, deep to right field, that brought home junior Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) to give GU a 5-0 lead.

O'Donnell took the hill in the top of the ninth inning, trying to earn his first complete game shutout, but three Bison errors erased that chance. The miscues allowed the Green Terror to plate two runs with just one out. A runner's interference call on a fielder's choice and a ground out to O'Donnell ended the game.

McDaniel starting pitcher Marty Windisch (0-1) suffered the loss as he pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and recorded two strikeouts.

GU got on the scoreboard in the second inning as senior third baseman Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) led off with a double to right field and freshman Justin Strong (Charlotte, N.C.) moved him to third with a single to center field. The table was set for freshman Ian Evans (Murphy, N.C.), who reached base on a groundout to the shortstop as Strong was forced out, Guinn came racing home.

In the sixth, a Strong groundout to shortstop scored a sliding Hicks at the plate, after he reached base on a McDaniel throwing error, one of five in the game for the Green Terror.

Senior outfielder Marcus Smith (Baltimore, Md.) continued his hot start to the 2014 season as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, stole three bases and scored one run in the seventh. Smith is batting .647 this season (11-for-17) with six runs and three stolen bases.

The Bison are off tomorrow but are back at Hoy Field on Saturday, March 1, for two games against Valley Forge Christian College at noon.
