GU fumbles chance against Castleton at home

Box Score

WASHINGTON – Castleton State College forced six turnovers to beat Gallaudet University, 21-0, in an Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) game on a cool Saturday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field.

Gallaudet (2-6, 2-4 ECFC) could not get the offense rolling as the Spartans held the triple option to only 135 yards of total offense. Bison miscues on offense and special teams allowed Castleton State (6-3, 4-2 ECFC) to start drives in great field position, near midfield or in Gallaudet territory.

A botched snap on a Bison punt in the second quarter handed the Spartans the ball at the Gallaudet 5 before Corey Brimmer scored the first of his two touchdowns. Brimmer scored his second touchdown at the 4:01 mark on a 4 yard run after a short punt allowed the Spartans to start at the Gallaudet 35. Castleton took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

Freshman quarterback Antoine McKinney (Racine, Wis.) was the top rusher for the Bison as he compiled 81 yards on 19 attempts but was 0 for 14 passing with one interception. Sophomore John Anderson (Clarksville, Tenn.) and junior Miguel Paniagua (New Orleans, La.) rushed for 51 and 32 yards, respectively.

The Bison defense, ranked No. 17 in Division III in total defense, kept the game close as they created three turnovers in the first half and stopped the Spartans on 4th down at the Gallaudet 2.

Sophomore defensive back Carneilus Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) picked off quarterback George Busharis (11-for-24, 125 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions) on the Spartans' second possession of the game around midfield. GU went 19 yards on four plays before junior kicker Eric Setzer (Middletown, Md.) pinned the Spartans at the 2 after a 31-yard punt. Setzer on the day punted nine times for 297 yards (average of 33 yards), three inside the 20 and a long of 54 yards.

Gallaudet coughed up the football in the second quarter at the Gallaudet 30 before Smith bailed the Bison out. Three plays later, Smith (seven tackles) intercepted Busharis, again, to thwart another Castleton State drive deep in GU territory. The Bison fumbled five times and threw one interception in the loss.

Senior linebacker Jaris Alleyne (Waldorf, Md.) led all Bison with 13 tackles (10 solo) as fellow senior linebacker Gregg McConville (Frederick, Md.) added 12 (seven solo). The defensive unit only allowed the Spartans to convert 1 of 17 third-down opportunities.

In the third quarter, Castleton extended the lead to 21-0 with a Busharis six-yard passing touchdown to Denver Divens. The Spartans ended the day with 279 yards of total offense. Jay Morgan, Ryan Stanek, Mike Perrone and Darren Callan each registered eight tackles to lead the Castleton defense.

Gallaudet will look to snap a four-game losing streak on Saturday, Nov. 15, when the Bison conclude its season at home against conference rival SUNY Maritime (3-6, 2-4 ECFC) on Senior Day at noon.
