Bison dispatched by SUNYIT, 84-58, on the road

MARCY, N.Y. – Gallaudet University couldn't matchup Saturday with the SUNYIT women's basketball team in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game as the Wildcats dominated the Bison, 84-58, in the Wildcat Field House.

Gallaudet (8-8, 5-2 NEAC), winners of its past two conference games, faced a tough task against SUNYIT (10-5, 7-1 NEAC), the top team in the North Division of the NEAC standings. The Wildcats took control of the game from the tip and never trailed. SUNYIT raced out to a 9-0 lead just three minutes into the game. The Wildcats shot nearly 50 percent from the field (47.2 percent) in the first half as the Bison made 10 of 34 shots (29.4 percent) and trailed 42-25 at halftime. GU only had eight rebounds in the first half compared to 20 by the host. 

The Bison trailed by as much as 29 points, late in the first half, and the second half GU was outscored 42-33.

Senior guard Britny Latham (Cleveland, Tenn.) led the Bison with a game-high 16 points, two blocks, two assists and two rebounds. Senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) was the second Bison in double figures as she tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) chipped in seven points, four rebounds, four assists and had three steals in the loss.

SUNYIT had a balanced attack as 11 of 13 players, who saw game action, scored four or more points. The SUNYIT bench played a critical role in their win as the group outscored the Bison bench, 43-14. Starting guard Geena Gallo and Nijah Townsend, who came off the bench, led the Wildcats with 12 points and seven rebounds each while Abbey Hanehan contributed 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

The Bison will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Jan. 28, when they face NEAC's first-place team, Lancaster Bible College (11-5, 8-0 NEAC), at 8 p.m. in the Field House.
