Box Score 2 WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of competition at the 7th annual Worthington Classic held in the Field House. Seven teams, in addition to the Bison, are in attendance for the two-day tournament in the nation's capital. The Bison defeated North Park University, 3-1, in the opening match Friday before they fell to Bridgewater (Va.) College in five sets, 3-2, in the nightcap.
Gallaudet (10-5) got off to a slow start as it dropped the first two sets, 22-25 and 25-27, to Bridgewater (7-11) but had an aggressive comeback as the Bison took sets three and four, 25-23 and 25-21. In the final set, the Bison attempted to recover from an 8-13 deficit but were unable to overcome and lost the set 12-15.
The Bison suffered a loss late in the second set as freshman middle hitter Giuletta Maucere (Frederick, Md.) left the game with an injury. The Bison struggled to find an answer for Bridgewater outside hitter Katie Long who tallied a game-high 19 kills, five of which she recorded in the decisive fifth set.
Riding off the momentum of last night's historic win against Johns Hopkins University, junior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) and senior outside hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded three double-doubles over the course of three matches. Frowick tallied 34 kills and 36 digs and Peters had 24 kills and 22 digs in the two matches on Friday. Freshman setter Tarja Lewis (Frederick, Md.) tallied 55 assists on the first day of the Worthington Classic.
The Bison took control early against the North Park Vikings as they won the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-13. In the third set, Gallaudet had the lead but North Park (6-7) would not go down without a fight. The Vikings outside hitter Shelby Switzer and middle back Neisha Bolian led the Viking offense as they combined for 31 kills. Capitalizing on errors by the Bison, the Vikings were able secure a third set win, 21-25, but could not even the match as the Bison took set four, 25-22. Frowick ended the match with a powerful kill off an assist from sophomore setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.).
Whittier (8-6) defeated Messiah (7-6) and Mary Washington (7-4) in straight sets in Pool B. Marymount (10-6) also went 2-0 as they knocked off Bridgewater, 3-1, and North Park, 3-0, in Pool A play. Messiah earned one win against Catholic (7-8) in a 3-0 victory.
The Worthington Classic continues tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 28) with the first two matches scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Gallaudet faces Marymount at noon with the playoffs slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
