Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The 2013 season got underway for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team Friday at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. The Bison faced tough competition in both matches and salvaged a split on the first day of the two-day tournament. GU lost in straight sets 21-25, 9-25, 22-25 to No. 22 Salisbury University. Gallaudet turned around and went toe-to-toe with Mt. St. Mary (N.Y.) College and won 3-2 (19-25, 25-15, 23-25, 26-24, 15-8).
Gallaudet (1-1) trailed the Knights (0-1) twice in the match but won a thrilling fourth set, 26-24, and won the fifth and deciding set 15-8.
Junior outside hitter Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) led the Bison with 18 kills on 49 attempts and made 33 digs. Senior opposite hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) was the other Bison in double digits with 10 kills, nine digs and one block assist. Sophomore setter TraciAnn Hoglind (Fishers, Ind.) served up a team best five service aces and passed out 23 assists.
In the loss to Salisbury (2-0) the Bison were paced by Frowick's nine kills, eight digs and Peters' four kills and 12 digs and four block assists. Freshman middle hitter Giuletta Maucere (Frederick, Md.) had a match-high five block assists in her collegiate debut.
The Sea Gulls were led by Mattie Smith (10 kills, 13 digs) and Julie Poston (nine kills) in the first win for new head coach Justin Turco.
GU will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 31) with a 10 a.m. match with Dickinson College (1-1) and a 2 p.m. match with Penn St.-Altoona (0-2).
