Box Score 2 CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Gallaudet University softball team dropped its first North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson College, losing 6-0 and 10-2.
Gallaudet (10-12, 0-2 NEAC) was no-hit by Wilson's (2-8, 2-0 NEAC) Nicole Musser in the first game, though the Bison did manage to have five base runners reach in the loss. Shortstop Chelsea Lee (South Brunswick, N.J.) drew a walk in the first inning followed by senior center fielder Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) reaching base on a fielder's choice resulting in Lee being out at second base. Gallaudet tried to string together a run in the third inning as well. Junior right fielder Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) got on base by an error by second baseman Megan Schneck, followed by an error by third baseman Maggie Sipps that allowed first baseman Zamica Gage (Austin, Texas) to reach first base safely and Ciccarelli to advance to second. Senior catcher Nicole O'Malley (Fredericksburg, Va.) reached first base in the third inning on a fielder's choice, when Ciccarelli was thrown out at third.
Wilson played small ball to score its six runs as the Phoenix scored their first run in the bottom of the first inning. Schneck reached first on an error by O'Malley, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ashleen McCollough. Schneck scored on a single by Taylor Crouse (2-for-3, double, three RBIs). The Phoenix scored four more runs in the second inning and the sixth and final run in the sixth inning.
Junior pitcher Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) pitched six innings as she gave up six runs (one earned) on 11 hits, walked three and tallied three strikeouts as her record drops to 5-5.
Pitcher Nicole Musser (1-4) went the distance, seven innings, as she walked one and struck out six to earn her first win of the season. Center fielder Tara Fields went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and one run scored.
Gallaudet scored its first run of the second game in the fourth inning on a Sweigart (1-for-2, two RBIs) single that scored Lee from second base after she drew a walk and advanced to second on a Johnson ground out. The second and last run for the Bison was scored in the sixth inning. Johnson (1-for-3, run) doubled to start the inning and advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Crouse. Johnson came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Sweigart.
Wilson started off scoring two runs in the first inning and tacked on one more in the third inning to make the score 3-0. The Phoenix scored two more runs in the fourth to up their lead to 5-2 before coming up with a five-run sixth inning to end the game 10-2 due to the mercy rule.
Sophomore pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) is now 5-5 after she pitched 5.1 innings and gave up 10 runs on 12 hits, walked six and tallied one strikeout.
Crouse (1-4) threw six innings for Wilson, giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Catcher Katelyn Wingerd went 2-for-3 with a triple, four RBIs and one run scored.
GU will travel to Penn St.-Abington on Saturday, April 6, for a NEAC doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
