Frostburg State halts Gallaudet's eight-game win streak

Box Score

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Gallaudet University baseball team saw their eight-game win streak snapped at the hands of Frostburg State University on the road Sunday. The Bobcats (9-6) scored early and often and withstood a Bison rally to hang on for a 7-5 win.

After tailing 6-1 after two innings, Gallaudet (8-6) answered with four unanswered runs to make it a one-run game after the fifth. The Bison were held scoreless for the rest of the game as the Bobcats added an insurance run in the seventh.

Gallaudet freshman pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) had a career-high eight strikeouts in the game. Holsworth (2-2) pitched six innings where he allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits, walked four and hit one batter. Unfortunately, the Gallaudet offense couldn't muster enough offense and tallied six total hits.

Senior right fielder William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) accounted for half of Gallaudet's hits as he finished 3-for-4. Chapman would also score twice. Sophomore center fielder William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) would score Gallaudet's other three runs. Bissell's only hit of the day was a triple in the second inning. Gallaudet's lead-off hitter and second batter combined to go 0-for-10 in the loss.

John Barrett was the star of the game as he had a game-high seven RBI. Barrett hit a grand slam home run in the second inning, a two-run triple in the first and added a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Joe Markiewicz picked up the win for the Bobcats as allowed five runs (three earned) in five innings of work and struck out eight Bison.

Gallaudet will look to get back to its winning ways on Wednesday, March 21, when they travel to Stevenson University for a nine-inning non-conference game at 4 p.m.
