TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore Alexandra
Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) won two events and placed
second in one event to lead the Gallaudet University women's
swimming team here Saturday in a non-conference meet against
Goucher College. The host Gophers won 124-73 but the Bison showed
improvement compared to last year's 78-11 loss to
Goucher.
Polivanchuk was first in the 100-yard backstroke when she
finished 1:05.83, just over six seconds ahead of Goucher's
Abigail Wegman (1:12.43). She followed that up with a win in the
100 breaststroke as she beat out Goucher's Nicole Craver by a
second, 1:13.11 to 1:14.19. Polivanchuk was out touched by Craver
in the 200 IM when she finished with a time of 2:19.12 compared to
Polivanchuk's time of 2:19.79. The Bison sophomore finished
with 22 of Gallaudet's 73 team points.
Senior Brittany Turner (Palmdale, Calif.) had
two third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:32.09) and the 100
butterfly (1:27.97). Junior Katie Giles
(Gaithersburg, Md.) finished third in the 100 freestyle (1:06.74),
eight seconds off first place, and finished third in the 100
breaststroke (1:24.73) behind Polivanchuk.
Several Bison swimmers continued to lower their personal best
times including freshman Brianna Stroud-Williams
(Tucker, Ga.), Liv Polzin (Frederick, Md.) and
Paige Foreman (Albuquerque, N.M.). Stroud-Williams
dropped over 12 seconds off her time in the 1,000 freestyle
(13:57.48) and the 500 freestyle (6:42.45). Polzin shaved two
seconds off her times in the 50 free (30.24 seconds), two seconds
off the first-place finish, and the 100 free (1:07.69), just behind
Giles. Foreman improved her time in the 200 IM by seven seconds
with a time of 3:06.34 and she was five seconds faster in the 100
butterfly (1:41.86).
Gallaudet will next swim on Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. in Cobleskill,
N.Y., to take on North Eastern Athletic Conference foes Wells
