WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was an emotional
'Senior Day' on Sunday at the Field House pool as the
Gallaudet University women's swim team celebrated one final
victory together with one of its deepest senior classes under Coach
Bill Snape, now in his seventh season at the
helm.
Gallaudet (5-6) defeated Hollins University 144-91 and lost
151-88 to Marymount (Va.) University in a double dual meet as
Gallaudet President Alan Hurwitz and company
looked on. Marymount completed the sweep with a 146-76 win over
Hollins. The Saints won 11 of the 14 events overall. In the Bison
win, Gallaudet took nine of the 14 events against Hollins.
Senior Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, Ind.) won the
200-yard butterfly against both teams with a time of 2:28.62.
Robinson was first in the 100 butterfly (1:06.08) and 200 freestyle
(2:11.41) against Hollins. She was also a member of the 200 medley
relay team (2:12.68) that took first against Hollins and was second
to Marymount. Seniors Misella Tomita (Kahului,
Hawaii), Katie Day (St. Elmo, Ill.) and sophomore
Tong Song (Beijing, China) were the other members
of that relay team for GU.
Tomita was first in the 200 backstroke against Hollins with a
time of 2:43.51 while Day was first in the 100 freestyle (1:07.69)
followed by senior Rachel Steingieser (New Market,
Md.) against Hollins. Song took first in three different individual
events against Hollins including 100 breaststroke (1:21.04), 200 IM
(2:43.84) and 200 breaststroke (2:54.17).
It was fitting that for the last event of the women's
double dual meet Snape assigned four seniors to participate in the
200 freestyle relay. Kayla Castro (Tucson, Ariz.),
Kate Johnson (Lake Alexander, Minn.), Day and
Steingieser closed out the meet with a third-place showing overall
as they touched the wall in 2:01.53. In addition to the
aforementioned seniors the program also recognized senior
Jennifer Hagerty (West Chester, Pa.) for their
efforts and dedication during their careers at Gallaudet.
GU will now have three weeks to prepare for the NEAC
championships on February 18-20 hosted by SUNY Cobleskill.
