NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The start of
Monday's non-conference baseball game on the road against
Christopher Newport University was not the start Gallaudet
University envisioned as the Bison surrendered 10 runs and had
their starting pitcher bounced before the third out. CNU (16-10), a
South Region power, marched to an 18-2 victory as the game was
stopped after seven innings.
Junior Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) started
the game for the Bison (1-24) but gave up 10 runs on 12 hits as he
only faced 14 batters before he was lifted for freshman
Peter Leccese (North Bellmore, N.Y.).
CNU sophomore third baseman Luke Saunders (2-for-3, two runs)
blasted a two-run home run as the third batter in the game off
Noschese (0-2). Saunders also added a double in the win.
The Captains added two runs in the second inning and six runs in
the fourth. In the six-run fourth, senior shortstop Parker Neal
(3-for-5, two runs) belted a three-run home run to drive in three
of his game-high four RBIs. Neal's two other hits were
doubles. Outfielder Shannon Mark also produced three hits, one
double, and scored twice and drove in two runs for the Captains.
CNU has won three games in a row and are 14-3 this season at
Captains Park. This was the second meeting all-time between the two
programs. CNU is 2-0 as the Captains won last season's game, 9-1.
Gallaudet scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Freshman Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.)
doubled as the second batter of the inning. The Bison first run
scored on a Captains error and then Barksdale scored on a sacrifice
fly hit by second baseman Kyle Kuschmider (Olathe,
Kan.).
GU will next host Lancaster Bible College in a non-conference
doubleheader on Thursday, April 8, with the first game slated to
begin at 2 p.m.
NOTES: Sophomore Jeremy Shepps
(Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was named a honorable mention honoree for
Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week announced by the
conference office on Monday.
