WASHINGTON, D.C. – A few days ago at Hoy
Field the Gallaudet University baseball team made Capital Athletic
Conference history as the Bison snapped a 0-150 regular-season
conference losing streak with a win over Stevenson University. On
Saturday afternoon, the curtain closed on the 20-year run the Bison
baseball program had in the CAC as visiting York (Pa.) College
clobbered Gallaudet 14-0 and 24-4 in a seven-inning doubleheader.
Gallaudet (1-23, 1-17 CAC) is officially eliminated from the CAC
tournament which will start in two weeks. The conference takes the
top six teams in the final standings. The CAC has seven baseball
programs. The Bison end their 20-year run in the CAC with a 4-214
regular-season record.
GU, a charter member of the CAC, is leaving the conference to
join the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) this summer.
York senior infielder Rick Shumway hit for the cycle as he went
6-for-6 at the plate, scored five times, drove in eight runs and
blasted two home runs in the second game. The Spartans combined to
club five home runs, three in the nine-run third inning alone. York
(15-9, 10-5 CAC) has won nine games in a row and is 51-0 all-time
against Gallaudet.
The Bison had pulled to within one run, 3-2, after they scored
two runs off York starting pitcher senior Chris Frankenfield (3-1)
in the second inning before the Spartans blew open the game in the
third inning. York added 12 runs over the final three innings of
play. GU's final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth
inning.
Freshman catcher Steven Gosselin (Hayward,
Calif.) scored twice and drove in a run on a single in the fourth
inning. Junior third baseman Zane Noschese
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) had two hits and a RBI single in the fourth for
the Bison.
GU senior Chester Kuschmider (Olathe, Kan.)
suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed 12 runs (five
earned) off seven hits, three walks, two hit batters, one wild
pitch as he struck out one.
In the first game, Gallaudet was in the game until the seventh
inning. The Bison only trailed 4-0 before the Spartans erupted for
10 runs in the top of the seventh. Gosselin (0-2) suffered the loss
as he allowed all 14 runs (10 earned) off nine hits, six walks, two
wild pitches, two hit batters and three strikeouts. York starting
pitcher Andy Rosenzwig (2-3) went the distance as he allowed three
hits, walked one and struck out five.
Gallaudet has a day off before it will travel to Newport News,
Va., on Monday to face Christopher Newport University at 3:30 p.m.
