SALISBURY, Md. - The Gallaudet University
baseball team was swept by No. 7 Salisbury University on Saturday
afternoon at Sea Gull Field as the Bison were shut out 17-0 and 9-0
in the Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader. A day before the
Sea Gulls beat the Bison by the same 17-0 score at Hoy Field.
Salisbury (8-1, 6-0 CAC) has not allowed a run to the Bison
since the 2008 season, a streak of 54 innings, as the Gulls have
outscored GU 135-0 during that span. Salisbury completes the
regular-season sweep of the Bison, who are leaving the CAC after
this season to compete in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
Gallaudet mustered four total hits in the two losses on Saturday
as sophomore shortstop Jeremy Shepps
(Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the way with two hits in the first game.
Shepps (0-2) pitched the first game and went over four innings
where he allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits, four walks, hit
two batters and struck out two. The other Bison hit in the
first game came from freshman outfielder Yuri
Johnston (Greensboro, N.C.) in the seventh inning.
SU third baseman Brian Green (4-for-4) had a big day at the
plate in the first game as he scored twice and knocked in seven
runs, four on a grand slam in the sixth inning off sophomore relief
pitcher John Bingham (Mullica Hill, N.J.). Junior
pitcher Kyle Judson (1-0) picked up the win in the first game as he
pitched four scoreless innings and struck out six Bison.
In the second game, Gallaudet turned to left-handed pitcher
Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.) for a spark
on the mound. Hastings (0-2) kept the game manageable as GU only
trailed 5-0 after three innings. Salisbury tacked on a few more
runs as the starters were lifted and the reserves came in for the
Sea Gulls. Chad Wolfe paced the offense for SU with three runs
scored, a double and a home run as he picked up three RBIs.
Junior Nathan Young (1-0) picked up the win for the Sea Gulls as
he hurled four scoreless innings and struck out five. Young allowed
one hit to Gallaudet off the bat of freshman Tommy
Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) in the fourth inning.
Hastings went four innings where he surrendered eight runs on
six hits, walked five, hit three and recorded one strikeout. The
lone strikeout came against All-American first baseman Mike Celenza
in the first inning.
GU will be off a day before the Bison host Penn St.-Berks on
Monday, March 8, for a non-conference doubleheader at Hoy Field
that begins at 2 p.m.
