Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The bats came alive
for the Gallaudet University baseball team in the sixth inning of
Sunday's Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) game against
University of Mary Washington at Hoy Field. The Bison made four
consecutive hits, three doubles in a row, which ended the Eagles
bid at a no-hitter and shutout as GU plated three runs. UMW won the
nine-inning game 14-3.
Gallaudet (0-17, 0-13 CAC) ended the no-hitter on a double by
sophomore Jeremy Shepps (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) with
two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shepps scored moments
later as sophomore first baseman Ryan Hastings
(Cherry Valley, Mass.) smacked a double down the left field line.
The double streak continued as freshman Yuri
Johnston (Greensboro, N.C.) stepped to the plate and sent
an offering from UMW junior relief pitcher Chris Anderson to deep
center field to score Hastings. Second baseman Kyle
Kuschmider (Olathe, Kan.) jumped on the hit parade as he
singled home Johnston and advanced to second base on the throw
home. That hit ended the day for Anderson who lasted just
two-thirds of an inning. Anderson got two quick outs to begin the
sixth inning but then surrendered four hits (three doubles) and
three runs. UMW junior relief pitcher Parker Talbert (six
strikeouts) entered and struck out catcher Steven
Gosselin (Hayward, Calif.) to end the big inning for the
Buff and Blue who were now down 13-3. The four hits were the only
hits Gallaudet had in the game. The three runs scored in the sixth
inning ended a 29-inning run drought for the Bison.
Mary Washington (12-5, 6-3 CAC) scored seven runs in the second
inning, three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the sixth and
one insurance run in the eighth. The bottom half of the
Eagles' line-up did a lot of the damage early on as catcher
Nick Espinosa, designated hitter Shane Sixsmith and right fielder
Jackson Clement combined to go 5-for-6 at the plate and hit two
home runs, scored five runs and drove in seven runs in the first
four innings. Clement jacked a three-run home run in the second
inning off Shepps (0-5) to left field. Sixsmith hit his first home
run on the season in the third inning, a two-run shot, with a high
drive down the right field line.
Shepps suffered the loss even though he looked sharp for the
majority of the game except for a few balls left up in the strike
zone. He finished the day with a line of seven innings pitched, 13
runs allowed (10 earned) on 14 hits, walked two and struck out four
Eagles as he faced 38 batters. Junior Zane
Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) relieved Shepps in the eighth
inning and closed out the game for the Bison.
Mary Washington starting pitcher junior John Miscioscia (1-0)
threw five scoreless innings as he left the game with the no-hitter
intact up 13-0. He finished with eight strikeouts and two walks as
he faced 18 batters.
Gallaudet remains in CAC play this week as the Bison travel to
York, Pa., on Wednesday, March 31, to face the Spartans from York
(Pa.) College for one game that starts at 3:30 p.m.
