WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Gallaudet
University baseball team scored a season-high eight runs and had a
season-high 14 hits but it wasn't enough against Sewanee-The
University of the South on Sunday afternoon at the Chain of Lakes
Field in Winter Haven, Fla., as the Bison (0-8) lost 17-8 to the
Tigers (4-8).
The first seven batters for the Bison collected at least one hit
led by sophomore Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley,
Mass.) and junior Kyle Kuschmider (Olathe, Kan.)
who had three hits apiece. Hastings collected three RBI singles in
his first four at-bats. Junior outfielder Zane
Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) matched Hastings with three
RBIs as Noschese hit a three-run triple in the eighth inning.
Starting pitcher Jeremy Shepps (Mechanicsburg,
Pa.) did well at the plate as he collected a double and a triple in
the loss. GU scored runs in the first, sixth, seventh, eighth and
ninth innings.
Shepps (0-3) pitched six innings where he allowed nine runs
(five earned) on eight hits and three walks as he struck out a
season-high nine batters. Shepps was lifted in the seventh inning
as Gallaudet trailed 9-3. Sophomore left-handed pitcher
Danny Gabel (Staten Island,
N.Y.) came in to close out the game. Gabel
surrendered eight runs on six hits as he walked two and struck out
two Tigers. Sewanee plated five runs in the top of the ninth inning
as the Tigers won their third straight game.
Tiger pitcher Chase Riemer (1-2) earned the win as the starter
went six innings where he allowed three runs on eight hits, walked
three and struck out 10. Sewanee was led offensively by shortstop
Connor Liston (4-for-6), four runs scored and a double. Right
fielder Joe Reilly (3-for-4) had three hits, all extra-base hits,
as he collected two doubles and a triple and scored three runs.
Third baseman Franklin Pogue (2-for-4) had a double and a triple to
go with his four RBIs in the win.
Gallaudet will have a special experience on Tuesday, March 16,
as the Bison will play in Dodgertown at Holman Stadium in Vero
Beach, Fla., against Daniel Webster College. Dodgertown used to be
the Spring Training facility for the Los Angeles Dodgers who now
play in Glendale, Ariz., for Spring Training.
