Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior guard Johnny
Jackson (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and the Gallaudet University
men's basketball program played its final Capital Athletic
Conference game on Sunday afternoon at the Field House against York
(Pa.) College and went out with a bang. It was a bittersweet day
for Jackson, who suited up for the Bison for one last time, as he
reached a monumental milestone with seconds left in the game.
York (Pa.) College (19-6, 11-5 CAC) had the game at hand in the
final minutes of play against Gallaudet (5-19, 0-16 CAC) but that
didn't stop the Bison (5-19, 0-16 CAC) from playing hard and
helping Jackson reach 1,000 career points. Jackson drove hard to
the basket and made a lay-up with 40 seconds left in the game to
notch his 35th point in the game, a career-high, and his 1,001th
career point. The game paused for a brief moment to recognize the
feat and allow Jackson to exit the game to a standing ovation. The
Spartans won the game 83-70 before a crowd of 325 at the Field
House.
"It feels unbelievable! I never thought I would reach a 1,000
points because that's not my role to be a scorer on the team," said
Jackson.
This was the final men's basketball game for GU in the CAC as
the Bison are leaving for the North Eastern Athletic Conference
(NEAC) this summer. Gallaudet is one of the charter members of the
CAC that formed back in 1989.
Jackson entered today's game needing 34 points to reach the
career milestone, ironically the same number as his jersey he has
worn out Gallaudet. The senior scored 12 points in the first half
on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and two free throws as the Bison
went into the locker room down 38-27.
York put the game away midway through the second half as the
Spartans led by as much as 25 points. York needed the win to secure
the second-seed in the upcoming CAC tournament where the Spartans
will receive a bye in the first round.
The Bison players wanted to help Jackson reach the career
milestone late in the game as he only needed 15 points with less
than 10 minutes left in the game. Jackson ended up taking 17 shots
in the second half where he made 10 of them and was 3-for-5 from
the free-throw line to net 23 points. He finished the game with a
game-high 35 points and five rebounds.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Johnny to reach 1,000
points in his career," said Gallaudet coach Jeb
Barber, who has coached Jackson all three years he has
been at the helm. "I am most proud of Johnny on how he has grown
while here at Gallaudet. He is a great leader and role model for
the players on and off the court. He has excelled academically and
is set to graduate this spring. That's what I am most proud of."
Jackson converted a three-point play with 1:42 left in the game
as he needed two more points to reach the milestone. He missed his
next two shots and made one of two free throws before he drove hard
to the left baseline against tall Spartan defenders and made the
nifty lay-up with 40 seconds to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
"It's really difficult for me being six-foot tall and playing in
the post going up against players five-six inches taller than me,"
said Jackson. "But it feels awesome to get 1,001. It is a great way
to end my career here at Gallaudet."
Jackson finished his four-year career with 1,001 points, 461
rebounds, 191 assists and 125 steals.
The Bison started the game off on the wrong foot as York jumped
out to a 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of play to force Coach
Barber to call a timeout to try and cease the Spartan momentum. Out
of the timeout, junior guard Bobby Siebert (St.
Paul, Minn.) hit a three-pointer to help spark the Bison on an 8-0
run. GU pulled to within two, 12-10, at the 12:47 mark but
that would be as close as the Bison would get against the Spartans.
York pulled away from GU later in the opening half as it closed out
the first 20 minutes of play with a 13-5 run to head into halftime
up 11.
The Spartans picked up where they left off in the second half as
York used a balanced scoring attack and deep bench to run down the
Bison. Sophomore forward Paul Kouvaris led the Spartans with 16
points, seven rebounds and five assists in only 23 minutes of play.
Senior guard Nick Brady had 11 points, eight rebounds, three
assists and three steals while senior forward Jeremy Keefer had 12
points, four rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Jeremy
Skoloda came off the bench to net 15 points, which include three
from three-point range.
Gallaudet freshman forward Danny Kelly
(Strongsville, Ohio) was the second-leading scorer for the Bison as
he recorded 11 points and grabbed four rebounds. Siebert had six
points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore
Tony Tatum (Birmingham, Ala.) added seven points,
three rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Luther
Weedon (Walkersville, Md.) scored five points in 13
minutes of action.
The two teams shot fairly even from the field both over 44
percent as the Bison made 27-of-57 shots (47.4 percent). GU
committed 20 turnovers, which led to 29 points for the Spartans.
The Bison edged the Spartans on the boards by one, 34-33.
