Weedon (Walkersville, Md.) didn't allow the opposition
ruin 'Senior Night' at the Field House as Gallaudet University had
the tough task to go up against nationally ranked St. Mary's (Md.)
College in a Capital Athletic Conference men's basketball showdown.
The Seahawks' depth and size was too much for the Bison (4-17, 0-15
CAC) to handle as No. 17 St. Mary's (20-3, 12-2 CAC) won 92-69
before a crowd of 450.
Weedon, who made his first start this season, hit his first five
shots from the field, which included three from three-point range.
Jackson added two baskets as the senior pair scored 17 of the 19
Bison points in the first six minutes of play. GU fell down early
by five points but went on a 12-0 run as the Bison seniors put on a
shooting exhibition to take a 19-9 lead with 13:50 left in the
first half.
St. Mary's chipped away at the Gallaudet lead as the Seahawk
backcourt of senior guard Camontae Griffin (20 points, four
rebounds, four assists) and junior guard Alex Franz (13 points,
four rebounds, four steals) led the way. Jackson made a lay-up to
give GU a 23-15 lead at the 10:31 mark. Over the course of the next
five minutes the Seahawks outscored the Bison 16-0. St. Mary's
regained the lead and took a 41-35 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Seahawks picked up where they left off
and outscored the Bison 19-6 to begin the final 20 minutes of play.
GU turned the ball over 13 times in the second half which led to 15
SMC points.
The two teams shot well from the floor in the game as St. Mary's
finished with 64.3 percent (36-for-56) and Gallaudet ended with
52.9 percent (27-for-51). The Bison hit 5-of-11 three-pointers in
the first half and shot over 64 percent from the free-throw line.
Both teams played 13 players apiece as St. Mary's bench outscored
Gallaudet 31-9, 19 of those points came in the second half. SMC
also doubled up GU on points in the pain, 48-28, and rebounds,
35-17.
Weedon finished with a game-high 20 points (16 in the first
half), as he was one of four players in double figures for the
Bison. Jackson contributed 12 points to go with six rebounds while
freshman Danny Kelly (Strongsville, Ohio) netted
15 points and sophomore Tony Tatum (Birmingham,
Ala.) added 11 points.
There is no rest for the Bison who will travel to Front Royal,
Va., on Thursday, February 18, to face Christendom College in a
non-conference game at 8 p.m. The two teams met back on November 23
as Gallaudet won 100-59. Gallaudet will be looking to end a 12-game
losing streak.
