Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet
University volleyball team could not defend its Worthington Classic
crown on Saturday at the Field House as the Bison lost in the
championship match to North Carolina Wesleyan College, 3-1. The
Bison finished the two-day tournament as runner-up with a 3-1
record.
Gallaudet (15-10) fell behind early to the Battling Bishops
(15-8) as they won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-18. The Bison
had to dig down deep in the third set and play several extra points
to earn the hard fought 28-26 set win. Sophomore Jessica
Israel (Frederick, Md.) nailed down one of her 14 kills to
give GU the 27th point and fellow sophomore Krystal
Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) served the Bison the
win with one of her three service aces. N.C. Wesleyan was too much
to handle in the end as it took the fourth set 25-11 to win the
Worthington Classic.
These two teams met a month ago at the Frostburg State
University Invitational where N.C. Wesleyan beat Gallaudet 3-2
(25-20, 18-25, 7-25, 25-23, 10-15) on September 11.
N.C. Wesleyan senior libero Kelly George was named the
tournament's most valuable player while her teammate Meredith Smith
was selected to the all-tournament team. Gallaudet sophomore
outside hitter Ann Whited
(Fishers, Ind.) was the Bison selection to the all-tournament team
after she knocked down a team-high 19 kills and 12 digs in the
championship loss.
GU earned a spot in the championship match with a 3-0 win (25-14,
25-21, 25-10) over Sweet Briar College in the morning. The Battling
Bishops defeated Emory & Henry College 3-1 (25-7, 17-25, 25-21,
25-19) in the first match of the day. N.C. Wesleyan earned the spot
in the championship match after it held the tiebreaker over
Catholic University of America (13-10) and Penn St.-Behrend (9-10)
from Pool B. The three teams both had 2-1 records after the first
three matches but the Battling Bishops held the point differential
margin.
Whited finished the day with 32 kills, 22 digs and four service
aces in two matches. Junior Paige
Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) passed out 72
assists and made 12 digs and seven kills. Israel combined for 24
kills and two block solos while sophomore Mari
Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) finished with
13 kills and 23 digs. Junior libero Micaela
Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) made 33 digs and recorded two
service aces. On the day, the Bison had 14 service aces in two
