Washington, DC.- Despite sterling pitching performances from
phenom freshmen Jeremy
Shepps and Ryan Hastings, the Gallaudet University Bison dropped
both
games of today's twinbill to the University of Mary Washington,
losing
the first game 14-2 and the second 3-2. The second game was
especially painful, as a close call at 3rd base in the bottom of
the 7th involving Jon Berscheit went Mary Washington's way and a
squeaker of a groundout from Ryan Hastings that nearly went away
from Mary
Washington's pitcher before he scooped it up and threw Hastings out
at
1st base to end the game.
The first game opened on an
inauspicious note, as Shepps gave up a solo
home run in the first inning and defensive errors contributed to
UMW
taking an early lead in the game. However, Shepps and the Bison
fought
back as he limited UMW to only one earned run, and the offense
notched
two runs in the 5th inning to make the game close. Mary Washington
then
extended their lead in the 6th to 8-2 after Shepps was lifted for
Brook
Fox, and tacked on a couple more insurance runs, all unearned, for
good
measure to win 14 - 2. Eight defensive errors hurt the Bison
in this game,
as all the runs scored in the first game were unearned except
one.
It was a different game in the
second half of the double-header,
though. Hastings took the mound for the Bison and hurled a
gorgeous
complete game, only giving up one earned run. A pitcher's duel
broke
out, as Mary Washington's man on the mound also threw a good game
before
being lifted for two relief pitchers which included Andrew Cox,
their
best pitcher, coming in to close the game for them. The Bison
offense
struggled to put some hits and runs on the board throughout the
game,
but nearly completed a dramatic comeback in the 6th and 7th
innings
before finally falling to Mary Washington 3-2.
