SALISBURY, Md. - Third-seed Gallaudet
University had high hopes going into Saturday evening's Capital
Athletic Conference (CAC) volleyball championship match against
top-seed Salisbury University but the Sea Gulls dominated the Bison
with a 3-0 shutout at the Maggs Center. This is the third straight
and sixth overall CAC title for the Sea Gulls, who receive an
automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament, as they beat
the Bison 16-25, 16-25, 19-25.
This was the last CAC match in Gallaudet history as the Bison
(24-14) are leaving after this season for the North Eastern
Athletic Conference. GU won seven conference championships since
1991 but had to vacate the 2005 and '06 titles.
Salisbury (30-4) reaches the 30-win mark for the fourth
time in school history. The Sea Gulls have won 26 consecutive
conference matches dating back to October 18, 2007, when the Bison
beat SU, 3-2.
Senior libero Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.),
the reigning CAC Player of the Week, ended the match with 20 digs.
Senior outside hitters Justine Jeter (Noblesville,
Ind.) and Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) recorded
13 and eight kills, respectively, in the loss. Sophomore setter
Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) passed
out 27 assists.
Gallaudet will await for the NCAA and Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) postseason pairings to see if the Bison will
extend their season an extra week. The NCAA tournament show will be
Monday, November 9, at 11 a.m. The ECAC pairings will follow later
on Monday or Tuesday.
