WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University
women's basketball team ran past Penn St.-York on the first day of
the GU Holiday Tournament as the Bison won 76-38 before a crowd of
200 on Saturday evening at the Field House. Gallaudet (2-2)
advances to Sunday's championship game where the Bison will
face-off against Penn St.-Altoona (5-0) at 4 p.m.
Junior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.)
scored a season-best 26 points in 26 minutes of action to pace the
Bison to their second victory of the season. Faafiti added 10
rebounds to notch her third double-double of the season, she also
had a team-high three steals. Junior Nukeitra
Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) made her season debut and dropped
11 points to go with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and
two blocks in 20 minutes of action. Senior Brittainy
Payne (Pine Hill, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to
go with eight points, two assists and steals.
Gallaudet led 37-22 at halftime before the Bison pulled away in
the second half as they outscored Penn St.-York, 39-16. The Bison
defense limited the Lions to a 24.6 shooting percentage from the
field. Laura Hoffman (10 points) and Tiffany Mummert (10 points)
were the only players to reach double figures with 10 points
apiece. GU outrebounded Penn St.-York, 53-29, and scored 44 of its
76 points in the paint. The Bison bench outscored Penn St.-York,
28-5.
In the first women's basketball game on Saturday, Penn
St.-Altoona remained perfect for the season as it squeaked out a
71-66 win against a pesky Goucher College team. Goucher (1-4) and
Penn St.-York (1-2) will meet in the women's consolation game on
Sunday at Noon. Penn St.-Altoona had three players in double
figures in Marissa Lucas (20 points), Courtney Carroll (19 points)
and Tamara Thomas (18 points).
