Box Score PAXTON, Mass. - The rushing attack displayed by
Gallaudet University could not be stopped against Anna Maria
College on a cold and windy Saturday in Massachusetts as the
Bison rolled up 521 yards en route to a 56-7 Halloween thrashing of
the AMCats.
The 521 total offensive yards compiled by Gallaudet, all on the
ground, is a new program record (in the modern era) as Gallaudet
moves to 5-4 for the season. The 49-point victory is the biggest
varsity win, as far as margin of victory, since an 80-0 shutout
against Shenandoah University in 1929.
Sophomore Phillip Hayes (Baton Rouge, La.)
scored the game's first and last two touchdowns as he racked up 214
rushing yards on 11 carries. Hayes averaged nearly 20 yards per
carry (19.5) as he scored a game and career-high five touchdowns.
Fellow sophomore Michael Gimeli (Deerpark, N.Y.)
added 143 yards on the ground on 19 carries and scored Gallaudet's
three other touchdowns.
Gallaudet's offensive line of seniors Philip
Endicott (Philadelphia, Pa.), William
Jacobs (Austin, Texas), Benjamin Bottoms
(Chesterfield, Va.), Michel Daze' (Frederick, Md.)
and sophomore Ryan Mahoney (Farmington, Ark.)
paved the way for the Bison runners. GU ran the ball 62 times and
averaged 8.4 yards per rush and had 27 first downs. The Bison
controlled the time of possession with over 33 minutes and was
8-for-10 on third-down conversions and 4-for-5 in the red zone.
Gallaudet scored touchdowns on its first three possessions in
the first quarter and added one final score before halftime up
28-0. The Bison did a better job protecting the ball today as they
only lost one fumble out of seven chances.
The Bison chewed up the clock in the second half as they scored
a touchdown on all four drives. Hayes scored his fifth and final
touchdown on a 52-yard run with under a minute left in the game.
Hayes also had touchdown runs of 49, 47, 29 and nine yards. Senior
kicker Justin Wilson (Phoenix, Ariz.) was a
perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts. Senior quarterback
Jimmy Gardner (St. Augustine, Fla.) ran the ball
16 times for 66 yards and had zero passing yards (0-for-3).
As impressive as the Bison were running the ball they were
equally impressive stopping the Anna Maria (0-9) offense. GU
limited the AMCats to 52 yards on the ground and 123 total
offensive yards. Sophomore defensive lineman Jon Van
Wey (Alexandria, Va.) led the way with eight tackles, two
sacks for a loss of seven yards and 5.5 tackles for a loss of 15
yards. Freshman Tom Pangia (Hammonton, N.J.)
matched the team-high with eight tackles. Senior linebacker Calvin
Doudt (Medina, Ohio) had an interception and returned the ball 44
yards.
The AMCats scored their lone touchdown late in the third quarter
when Santino Simone scored from four yards out to complete a
16-play, 68-yard drive that used over seven minutes. Rich Brandt
led the Anna Maria defense with 10 tackles.
The Bison remain 3-2 in the Eastern Collegiate Football
Conference and tied for third-place with SUNY Maritime (6-3) as
Anna Maria is not playing a complete ECFC schedule this season. GU
will close out the regular-season on Friday, November 6, on the
road against Maritime at 7 p.m.
