FREDONIA, N.Y. - The long travel was well worth
it for the Gallaudet University volleyball team who finished second
at the SUNY Fredonia Invitational held at Dods Hall on Saturday.
The Bison racked up three consecutive wins during the two-day
tournament before GU fell to the host Blue Devils.
Gallaudet (11-8) won back-to-back shutouts on Friday against
Ithaca College and St. John Fisher College. The Bison took down the
Bombers from Ithaca, 25-20, 25-23, 25-19. After a break the Bison
went back to work and took care of business against St. John Fisher
as they won 25-23, 25-20, 25-19.
On Saturday, the Bison won their third straight match with a
23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-10 victory against SUNY Cortland. Gallaudet
then had the tough task to take down SUNY Fredonia in its home gym.
GU dropped the first two sets but won the third set before the two
teams went the distance in the fourth set as the Buff and Blue lost
14-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-27.
Senior libero Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.)
was named to the all-tournament team as she made 82 digs and seven
service aces in four matches. Senior outside hitter Justine
Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) recorded 65 kills, 39 digs,
seven service aces and two block solos while fellow senior hitter
Amanda Krieger ( Carmel, Ind.) tallied 55 kills,
38 digs, four block solos and three service aces. Sophomore
Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) passed
out 150 assists in four matches and made 27 digs and four kills.
Johnson averaged 37.5 assists per match. Freshman Ann
Whited (Fishers , Ind.) made 38 kills and 39 digs during
the invitational.
Gallaudet dives back into Capital Athletic Conference play next
week as the Bison travel to York, Pa., on Wednesday, October 7, to
face the Spartans of York (Pa.) College at 7 p.m.
