WASHINGTON, D.C. - It was a quick match for the
Gallaudet University volleyball team as the Bison stampeded past
Hood College, 3-0, on Wednesday night at the Field House before a
crowd of 250. Gallaudet clinched a playoff berth in the Capital
Athletic Conference tournament with the 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 win.
The Bison (18-9, 5-2 CAC) are currently in third-place in the
conference behind undefeated Salisbury University and one-loss
University of Mary Washington. GU's only two conference losses came
against those two teams.
GU has one more conference game next week on the road against
Wesley College (October 26). The top six teams in the CAC make the
postseason tournament. The top two teams receive a first round bye
while the two other first round matches will be held on Tuesday,
November 3.
The Bison used all healthy players in uniform against Hood
(5-16, 0-7 CAC) as Gallaudet jumped early on the Blazers in all
three sets.
Senior outside hitter Amanda Krieger (Carmel,
Ind.) led the way with 10 kills on 22 attempts (.409) and added
seven digs and three service aces. Fellow senior outside hitter
Justine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) knocked down
eight kills and tied for the team-high with 10 digs. Freshman
Ann Whited (Fisher, Ind.) added nine kills and six
digs upfront for the Bison. Sophomore setter Paige
Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) passed out 24
assists in two sets played while freshman Lauren
Benedict (Germantown, Md.) saw action in two sets and
passed out six assists. Senior libero Shana
Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) tied for the team lead with 10
digs and added three service aces. Freshman Krystal
Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) made her first start
since the beginning of the season when the Bison were without four
starters, who were in the 2009 Deaflympics. Freshman middle hitter
Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) recorded four
kills and one block solo. Freshmen Sabrina Roult
(Frederick, Md.) and Kirsten Pudas (St. Cloud,
Minn.) also saw action in the win.
Gallaudet will host its final home matches of the regular-season
at the Field House on Saturday, October 24, when the Bison welcome
Lebanon Valley College and The University of Scranton for a
tri-meet. GU will start the day against LVC at 11 a.m. and then
Scranton at 3 p.m.
