WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Amanda
Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) took home MVP honors as Gallaudet
University went a perfect 4-0 en route to capturing the Worthington
Classic championship on Saturday at the Field House. The Bison
defeated Saint Vincent College, 3-1, in the championship match
between the last two unbeaten squads in the seven-team tournament
hosted by GU.
Gallaudet (16-8) took the first set 25-20 before the Bearcats
(17-7) bounced back with a 25-14 second set victory. The Bison
closed out the championship match with 25-19 and 25-21 set
victories.
In addition to Krieger, the Bison had two other players on the
Worthington Classic All-Tournament team in seniors Justine
Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) and Shana
Lehmann (Frederick, Md.).
GU relied on a strong service game in the four victories in the
two-day tournament as the Bison recorded 43 service aces (3.1 per
set). Gallaudet also had 192 kills (.305 attack percentage) for the
weekend.
Krieger led the team with a strong overall game for the weekend
where she recorded 53 kills, 35 digs, 14 service aces and one
block. Jeter was close behind with 59 kills, 30 digs, 13 service
aces and four blocks. Lehmann made a team-high 98 digs (seven per
set) while sophomore setter Paige Johnson (North
Richland Hills, Texas) passed out 170 assists. Freshman
Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) was strong for the
Bison upfront as she made 12 blocks (0.86 per set) in the classic.
Gallaudet started the tournament off with two victories on
Friday night as the Bison defeated University of Dallas 3-1. The
Buff and Blue were led by Jeter (18 kills, 12 digs) and Krieger (17
kills, 11 digs) in the 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15 victory. In the
evening, Gallaudet shutout Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-0,
before a nice crowd of 500. Johnson passed out 37 assists and
Krieger knocked home 15 kills in the 25-18, 25-9, 25-21 win.
The Bison started Saturday off with an early morning 3-0 victory
against FDU-Florham 25-9, 25-16, 25-19. The Bison had 10 service
aces in the game led by Krieger's six.
Gallaudet will take a five-match winning streak into next week's
highly anticipated Capital Athletic Conference showdown on the road
against Salisbury University. The Bison will face the first-place
Sea Gulls on Tuesday, October 13, at 7 p.m.
