Tony Tatum, Johnny Jackson,
Jr., and Jeremy Thrush scored
in double figures today, but Gallaudet was not able to defeat St.
Mary's (MD) College, one of the toughest opponents on Gallaudet's
schedule this year, with a 13-3 record. The final score was
St. Mary's 84, Gallaudet 59.
Gallaudet played well for most of the game, especially at the
start, jumping to a quick 5-0 lead on a free throw by Chi Pun, and jump shots
by Tatum and Jon
Mowl. Despite the fast start, St. Mary's went into half-time
ahead 41-30.
In the second half, the Bison fought back, coming within three
after a lay-up by Mowl with 13 minutes left. But a 9-0 run, and
later a 10-0 run by St. Mary's hurt the Bison down the stretch.
Tatum led all Bison scorers with 15 points, Jackson added 13 and
Thrush had 10 off the bench. Two main areas hurt the Bison.
Field goal shooting and free throw shooting. St. Mary's shot
56% from the floor compared to 38% for Gallaudet. From the
free throw line, Gallaudet was just 8 of 21.
Gallaudet Head Coach Jeb
Barber told his team he was proud of their effort against such
a strong team. "I'm proud of the way we fought and left it
all on the floor against a team that was a previously ranked top 20
team nationally. We need to keep fighting and playing hard every
night."
Gallaudet is now 7-7 this season. After playing 6 of their
previous 8 games on the road, Gallaudet returns home this week,
starting with a Wednesday night duel vs. York College in the Field
House at 8 pm.
