WASHINGTON, DC--Gallaudet fought back to tie the game on the
final play of regulation against Hiram College before losing in an
overtime thriller 20-14.
Justin Wilson kicked a 29-yard field goal for Gallaudet on the
final play of regulation in a howling wind to tie the score at
14-14 in a game that both teams led several times. Hiram's Trevor
Henderson won the game in overtime with a 7-yard touchdown run.
Ty Hubbard made several big plays for Gallaudet, picking off a
blocked field goal and returning it 88 yards for a touchdown,
tackling Hiram in the end zone for a safety, and making 6 tackles
and 2 assists on defense. Calvin Doudt led the defense with 11
tackles and 3 assists, while Michel Daze added 6 tackles and 3
assists.
On offense, Chester Kuschmider had 4 receptions for 44 yards and
Cole Johnson added 4 receptions for 20 yards.
In addition to his overtime touchdown, Trevor Henderson rushed for
a one yard touchdown and threw a 7 yard touchdown pass to Steve
Hammond in regulation. Henderson finished 30-42 passing for
212 yards and one interception.
Over 500 fans braved the wind, cold, and rain to watch the
exciting season opener for both teams.
Gallaudet next plays St. Vincent on Sept. 13 at Hotchkiss Field at
1 pm.
