St. Vincents' defense held Gallaudet scoreless in the second
half after allowing 22 first half points, allowing St. Vincent's to
escape Hotchkiss Field with a 23-22 win.
Gallaudet jumped out to a quick 13-0 first quarter lead on a one
yard touchdown run by junior running back Dmitry Rossoshansky
(Chicago, IL/Illinois School for the Deaf) and a 4 yard touchdown
pass from junior quarterback Fletch Kuehne (Austin, TX/Model
Secondary School for the Deaf). The PAT after the first touchdown
was blocked by St. Vincent's.
In the second quarter after a St. Vinccent's field goal that
made the score 13-3, Gallaudet responded on its next play with a 69
yard touchdown pass from Kuehne to junior wide receiver Cole
Johnson (Edina MN/Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf) that put
the Bison up 20-9.
St. Vincents' responded with a 59 yard touchdown run by freshman
running back Jairus Marlow (Greenacres, FL/J.I. Leonard). The extra
point attempt was blocked, making the score 20-9.
Gallaudet scored later in the quarter on a safety to go ahead
22-9. On their final drive on the half, St. Vincent's went 49
yards, ending with a 24 yard touchdown pass from freshman
quarterback Kevin Corona (Miami, FL/ Florida Christian) to junior
wide receiver Rob James (Jeannette, PA/Jeannette) tclose the gap to
22-16 at the half in favor of Gallaudet.
The only scoring by either team in the second half was a one
yard toouchdown run by sophomore fullback Marc Gonzales
(Pittssburgh, PA/North Catholic) halfway through the fourth
quarter.
A final Gallaudet drive ended at the St. Vincent's 39 before
time ran out.
Kuehne was 16-25 passing for 190 yards and two touchdowns and
two interceptions and rushed for 37 yards. Johnson caught 5 passes
for 123 yards and one touchdown and Alley added 5 more
catches for 34 yards and one score. Freshman defensive back Jared
Vollmer (Delavan, WI/Delavan-Darien) led the defense with 10
tackles and two assists and made one interception and sophomore
outside linebacker Ty Hubbard (Greenville, TX/Texas School for the
Deaf) added 7 tackles, one assist, and one interception that he
returned 30 yards to the one yard line leading to a Bison
toouchdown.
Gallaudet (0-2) next plays at Greensboro College at 1 pm
Septemmber 20.
