Gallaudet faced two strong teams with a combined 56-9 record
today, at the Elizabethtown Halloween Classic, and shocked
SUNY-Cortland to break their 11 match winning streak, 14-25, 25-21,
25-22, 25-23. In their other match of the day, Gallaudet lost to
Eastern, which is ranked 22nd in the nation, with a 29-1 record,
15-25, 12-25, 23-25.
SUNY Cortland beat Gallaudet back in September, 3-1, so the
turnaround today shows how much the volleyball team has improved
this season. Head
Coach Lynn Ray Boren said, "This was the best strategy we used
all season. We dominated them with our mixed serves and attacks in
the last three sets. Our players felt good and understand what they
need to do to win."
In the fourth set, Gallaudet was down 18-23 before Amanda Kreiger
served seven straight times to give Gallaudet the win 25-23. "It is
a good sign we are able to do this when we are behind," explained
Boren. "This gives us confidence that no matter what the score, is
we need to keep fighting and playing hard."
Gallaudet is now 16-17 on the season. Tomorrow morning they play
Washington & Jefferson, which is 15-10, at 10 am. At 2 pm, they
play the host school, Elizabethtown, which is 15-17.
