WASHINGTON, DC--Gallaudet suffered its most lopsided loss in
three seasons under Head Coach Ed Hottle, a 52-13 defeat at the
hands of visiting Case Western Reserve. However, the score did not
dictate the progress that the Bison offense showed on the field
today. Both of the scores came on offensive drives that had a total
of 10 plays and ate up three minutes off the game clock. The Bison
showed streaks of offensive brilliance and execution that averted
the shutout. Quarterback Jason Coleman had an interception-free
day, completing 23 of 35 passes for his Division-III career high
317 yards.
Coleman wasn't the only one who had a strong
performance--receiver Kevin Alley, for whom some have coined the
phrase "In Alley We Trust", lit up the Spartan defense with 172
yards off 8 catches and a 45-yard touchdown reception.
Receiver Cole Johnson also had a good outing, gaining 91 yards
off 7 catches. In the fourth quarter, the Bison showed
determination, as Coleman connected with Shawn Shannon for a
28-yard touchdown pass. A 30-yard pass by Coleman that almost found
its home in Alley's hands was broken up by a Spartan defender at
the last minute--in the end zone, as the second half wound down.
The Buff and Blue ground effort netted 101 yards with three
backs--Coleman, Dmitry Rossoshansky and Dan Alexander. Coleman
scrambled for 83 yards to lead the Bison rushers.
On defense, linebacker Adam Tygart led the troops with 9.5 total
tackles. Safety Rantz Teeters was right behind, dishing out
piledriver hits one after another for 8.5 stops and a fumble
recovery. Calvin Doudt rounded out the top three tacklers with 7.5,
an indication of a balanced defensive effort. While the defense did
not record an interception, it had 19 players combine for 65
tackles.
Case Western rode to its 52 points largely based on the output
of receiver Tim Cowdrick, who did not score a touchdown, but padded
the Spartan offense with 211 yards off 10 catches. Quarterbacks Dan
Whalen and Angelo Mirano combined for 340 yards passing.
The Bison (2-3) continue their home stay against Becker College
on Saturday, October 6. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
