WASHINGTON,DC--The Bison looked to continue their winning ways
at Hotchkiss Field against visiting Greensboro College. However,
the Pride had different things in mind as they capitalized on Bison
miscues on the way to a 48-7 win off 399 yards of total offense.
Defensive back Marty Blomquist stoked the Bison fire with a
blocked punt and a recovery. When the offense could not convert a
third and long, the missed field goal attempt by kicker Justin
Wilson set up the Pride at their own six-yard line with 10 minutes
to go in the first quarter. The next drive took 21 plays and
covered 94 yards, resulting in a five-yard punch in by Chris
Palmer. He would miss the ensuing PAT to keep the score 6-0,
Greensboro as first quarter action expired.
Greensboro struck again early in the second quarter off a
14-yard Torrey Lowe run to go ahead 13-0. However, the Bison would
not account for being shut out in the first half as quarterback
Jason Coleman capped an 11 play, 80-yard drive with a
connection to Dan Alexander that put Gallaudet on the board,
13-7.
A personal foul (roughing the kicker) on linebacker Joshua Doudt
as the first half counted down would result in the Bison kicking
off from their own 15 as the third quarter started. Pride receiver
Rod Hill returned the kick 60 yards to continue the Pride scoring
(20-7). The rest of the second half saw more Bison mental errors
that culminated in the 48-7 final score.
Pride players Chad Johnson, David Rushing, and Matt Martin each
had touchdowns as Torrey Lowe led the Pride rushing effort with 103
yards on 26 carries.
On defense, the Bison worked hard as the unit stayed on the
field for most of the game. Defensive back Robin Shannon, who is
ranked #2 in the nation in Tackles For Loss, led the way with a
total of 10.5 tackles (7 solos, 7 assists). Shannon also had an
assist on a sack, and posted 3.5 tackles in the TFL category. Other
Bison defensive leaders were Joshua Doudt, Calvin Doudt and Adam
Tygart, posting 7, 5 and 4.5 stops respectively.
The Bison (2-1) prepare to bounce back next week as the
Buff and Blue take the road to Denison University in Ohio. Kickoff
is set for 2:00 p.m.
