The Buff and Blue opened its 2007 hoops slate against the
DeSales University Bulldogs in a 79-56 loss. In head coach Jeb
Barber's debut, Gallaudet played with a team that won the
2007 ECAC South Region tournament in the first half, as the
Bulldogs could only build a 37-29 advantage.
While the Bison were undersized against the taller Bulldogs, they
matched up in intensity. Senior forward Onye Davis (6'3, 235)
paced the Buff and Blue over the first half with 8 points and 5
boards. Bulldog center Phil Stricker (6'5) posted 9 points,
with guard Eddie Ohlson's 5 assists.
In the second half, the Bulldogs converted shots in a 20-0 run
that lasted five minutes after Jon Mowl made a layup to cut the
halftime lead to 6 points. The Bison would not get any closer than
22 points despite solid efforts from the lineup and bench
players.
Sophomore guard Lance Gonzalez and Mowl both led the Bison with 13
points, and Mowl picked up 3 assists. Onye Davis finished with 10
points and 9 rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double in the
first game of the season. Sophomore guard Johnny Jackson, Jr. had 7
points as junior guard Chi Ming Pun added 6 and four rebounds.
Freshmen Daniel Fava, Joshua Sechman and Bobby Siebert also saw
playing time, with Fava topping the rookie boards at 5 and Sechman
draining a trey.
Gallaudet (0-1, 0-0 CAC) goes to Maryland Bible College on Monday,
