WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University will make history Sunday morning when the women's triathlon program hosts its first home competition on campus, another milestone for one of the University's newest varsity sports.
The Bison will welcome Eastern Mennonite University to Kendall Green on Sunday, Sept. 6, for an Aquabike competition beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event was originally scheduled as a triathlon before being modified to a swim-and-bike format. Aquabike is a recognized multisport discipline consisting of swimming and cycling.
The competition will begin in the Gallaudet swimming pool with two swimming waves scheduled for 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. Athletes will complete a 500-yard swim (20 laps) before transitioning to the cycling portion of the event. The six-mile bike course consists of five laps around a 1.21-mile loop through the Gallaudet campus.
Sunday's event represents a significant step forward for the Gallaudet women's triathlon program, which began varsity competition in 2024. For the first time, the Bison will have an opportunity to compete on their home campus in front of the Gallaudet community.
Fans are encouraged to come out Sunday morning and support the Bison during this historic event.
CAMPUS TRAFFIC INFORMATION
Due to the cycling portion of the event, Lincoln Circle will operate as a one-way street from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday. Vehicles entering campus through the 8th Street and Florida Avenue main entrance will be directed to the right and should follow all posted traffic signs and directions from event staff.
Motorists will share portions of the roadway with cyclists during the competition. Cyclists will have the right-of-way. Drivers should yield to all competitors, look carefully in both directions before crossing the cycling route and not cross when cyclists are approaching.
Switzer Drive near Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES) will also be closed during the event, although access to the KDES parking garage will remain available.
The Gallaudet Athletics action continues later Sunday when the men's soccer team hosts a home game at noon on Hotchkiss Field. Soccer fans arriving after 11 a.m. may enter campus through the main entrance at 8th Street and Florida Avenue and park in the Field House parking lot.
