Bison drop conference doubleheader to Penn St.-Abington

WASHINGTON - On a hot, sunny Wednesday in the nation's capital, Gallaudet University hosted Penn State Abington for a United East softball doubleheader at the GU Softball Complex.

The visiting Nittany Lions defeated the Bison 6-1 and 8-0 (five innings).

Game 1: Penn St.-Abington 6, Gallaudet 1
Senior pitcher Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) retired the side in order in the first inning before she allowed two runs (one earned) over the next two innings.

Sophomore outfielder Sophia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) broke up the scoreless tie in the fourth inning by reaching on a fielder's choice that brought sophomore third baseman Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Nittany Lions added four insurance runs over the final three innings, including three in the final inning, to secure the victory.

First-year outfielder Sammie Howell (Columbus, Mont.) recorded one hit and drew two walks to bring her season total to 22, the most in the United East Conference.

Drolsbaugh (6-10) pitched a complete game and took the loss in the circle as she recorded one strikeout and issued one walk.

Game 2: Penn St.-Abington 8, Gallaudet 0 (F/5)
Gallaudet (6-17, 0-9 United East) slowed down the Nittany Lions' offense, as the Bison only allowed three hits after they surrendered 10 in the first game.

However, Penn St.-Abington (12-16, 3-9 United East) capitalized on the Bison's miscues and scored in every inning to secure an 8-0 five-inning mercy-rule victory.

Howell, Bond and sophomore third baseman Olivia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.) were the only Bison to record a hit.

Bond (0-4) started the game and took the loss as she recorded one strikeout over 2.0 innings.

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will hit the road this Saturday, April 18, as the Bison travel up to Middletown, Pa., to face Penn St. Harrisburg (16-8, 6-4 United East) for a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader.
